Sitting here on a cold October morning in New York, it’s dawning on me that winter is around the corner. Before we know it, the leaves will fall, temperatures will dip into the upper 30s and the nights will get longer – and that’s just before Thanksgiving. Winter in many parts of the world is what we know in New England as “real cold”. The type of cold that forces us to take extra steps each day in order to stay warm. Millions of people that experience “real cold” live in apartments, some of which are warmer than others. Plus, there’s the occasional stretch of cold that’s noticeable no matter what kind of building your apartment is in. If your apartment is too cold in the winter, here are some tips to warm up.

This is one of many random questions I found myself asking as a kid. “How much sound can you hear up high in a tall building?”. Who would’ve known that one of my childhood questions would be answered simply by living life? I’ve lived in tall or tallish buildings over the last decade or so, ranging from floor 3 to over 300 feet in the air. So, are high floors quieter in apartment buildings? Rather than give a yes or no answer, I’ll describe the type of noises we’ve been able to hear on each floor we’ve lived on – from the ground up.

We’ve all seen the damage a hurricane can inflict. A ‘major’ category hurricane brings with it wind speed in excess of 111 miles per hour, which knock down trees and inflict significant damage to framed structures (i.e. residential homes). Riding out a hurricane is a scary experience no matter what kind of home you live in. What about in really tall buildings? Are high rise apartments safe in hurricanes? Do the residents need to evacuate or do they hunker down in place? In this article, I’ll cover a few facts and outline my own experience in doing so!

Sun, fresh air, long days and warm nights. That’s what comes to mind when we think of summer, right? Of course! That’s not the whole story, though. Hair-altering humidity, damp, thick air and sleeping as still as possible are very real aspects of summer, too. When it comes to apartments, not all of them offer reprieve from the summer heat. Any of us come to a specific conclusion during the first summer in our new place: “Wow, my apartment is too hot in the summer!” As someone who moved into a high rise apartment with no air conditioning in the middle of July one year, I completely understand! Let’s talk about a few ways to beat the heat and make our apartments more livable in the hot months.

Many people move into high rise apartments for the conveniences they offer. There’s no yard to maintain, no garbage cans to drag curbside, no driveways to shovel. There are certainly advantages to living in a high rise. You’d think that dealing with bugs in high rise apartments is the last thing you’d have to worry about. Insects live in nature, right? Surely there won’t be any on the 25th floor of a high rise building! Well, we have some interesting news based on our experience.
